Description
The Missouri Energy Initiative (MEI), a statewide 501(c)3 nonprofit focused on emerging energy issues in Missouri and the Midwest, seeks an intern for its public policy & economic development initiatives to support a variety of projects, including its Energy Storage Industry & Supply Chain Initiative, Property Assessed Clean Energy program administration, energy legislation tracker, Public Service Commission database & weekly update, and research & development of various white papers and long-form posts.
Skills / Qualifications

Senior standing or bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study working towards an advanced degree.

Interest in and familiarity with energy policies strongly preferred.

Experience researching legislation and policy preferred.

Strong writing and oral communication skills required.

Self-motivation and ability to manage multiple assignments (as needed), work efficiently, and meet deadlines.

Duties & Responsibilities
-
Research, track, synthesize, and summarize public policy issues affecting the Missouri energy sector.

Assist in the preparation of materials to communicate policy issues to organizational partners, energy stakeholders, and decision makers.

Manage updates to MEI’s legislative and Public Service Commission databases.

Analyze economic development and energy efficiency improvement projects

Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Timing / Compensation
The summer internship starts in early May 2022 and may extend into the fall semester. The internship will require a time commitment of ~ 20 hours/week. This is a remote internship.
Compensation includes a $1,000 stipend, networking opportunities, professional development, and significant contacts in the business and energy communities. MEI will work with your college or university to provide proper credit and oversight.

2023 Public Policy Intern
Kim Auzat is excited to be joining Missouri Energy Initiative as a Summer intern. She is currently pursuing a degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia in International Political Science and French. In addition to this, Kim has worked with nonprofits such as Veterans United and City of Refuge where she focused on operations and management. Kim is thrilled for the opportunity to collaborate with the MEI team and learn from professionals, and actively contribute to the organization’s mission of advancing clean energy solutions.
Jake Hipsher, University of Missouri-

2023 Public Policy Intern
Jake Hipsher is entering his third year at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Studying journalism, sociology, and public policy, he hopes to advance communication and advocacy efforts for areas in need. He has previously worked with the University of Missouri Flagship Council and MU Extension, and is eager to gain more experience with the Missouri Energy Initiative.

Alex Goodman, University of Missouri-Columbia
2020 Public Policy Intern
Alex assisted MEI with public policy research regarding state economic development and energy storage by investigating the causes of industrial hubs with a focus on battery energy storage systems in other states and engaging with state stakeholders on the economic and research potentials of this technology.
Alex is now an Associate Consultant and Analyst with SES, Inc.
Zarnab Rahim, University of Missouri-Columbia
2019 Public Policy Intern
Zarnab completed her Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Missouri. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from University of Alberta along with her Certificate in Economics and Management of Natural Resources, Energy and the Environment from the School of Business. Before starting her Master’s, she worked as a Project Analyst with the Government of Alberta and has extensive knowledge of operating policies and procedures. She has a particular interest in energy and environmental policy and hopes to pursue a career in energy and environmental policy.
Jolyon Larson, Indiana University
2017 Public Policy Intern
Jolyon received a Masters in Public Affairs from the School for Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University in Bloomington. His concentration was in Energy Policy and he has a particular interest in the nexus between energy and environmental policy, energy infrastructure finance and energy policy development. Before attending IU, Jolyon received his Bachelors degree from Hendrix College in Political Science. He previously severed as a research assistant with the Institute for European Studies in Brussels, Belgium.
Jolyon is currently a PhD. student at the University of Vermont.
